Just like everyone else I started reading the news about COVID-19 weeks ago. I was shocked by the news of what was happening in China, the toll it took on the sick, the dying, the families left behind, the medical care workers, and the government. But when the virus began to spread and I watched my own country, city, and neighbourhood descend into chaos, my heart began to sink. I felt such sadness and anger at the sight of selfishness, greed, and 'self-preservation' in the form of toilet paper. News of profiteering and hoarding began to spread.
As I sat in my living room, building a new website, writing emails and making calls for Sparrow & Co. to establish partnerships with people, businesses, and organizations, I started to tear up. I was blessed to be focused on generosity, compassion, & self-sacrifice in the midst of this COVID-19 crisis. What a stark contrast to what was happening around us.
Sparrow & Co. is working on rallying people to help us accomplish our mission: to support Scarborough families and individuals in need with 16 weeks of farm fresh produce for the duration of our farming season. We aim to support people who rely heavily on food banks, community food programs, and city support services in order to survive from day to day. I am so proud to be part of this organization. I hope that the current state of global affairs will spur us on to love more, to do good, and to take part in the kind of self-sacrifice that lifts others into greater hope, health, and strength of heart. Join us. Give back.
