Sparrow & Co. is a not for profit social enterprise that was created to serve the local community by strategically directing our profits and resources towards those in need. Our business is a dream come true for our founders. They wanted to create pathways towards hope and purpose for those caught in the cycle of poverty and mental health issues. When news about our mission began to spread, a generous Sparrow & Co. supporter offered his quarter acre of land as a gift to be used as farmland. Plans were drawn up and volunteers started pouring in. We held our ground-breaking ceremony in the fall of 2017 in order to prepare for the 2018 farming season. Soon after, the farmland of Sparrow & Co. became known as Sparrow Gardens.
HOW WE DO IT
Our farm manager, Tasha, blazed the trail ahead. With the help of our precious volunteers, Sparrow Gardens was up and running during the fall of 2017. For the past three years, nearly a hundred volunteers have joined our efforts to accomplish our mission and vision. This made it possible for us to launch our veggie subscription program and join farmer’s markets at the University of Toronto Scarborough Campus in 2018, and Evergreen Brickworks in 2019.
THE DREAM COME TRUE
As a support to the community, we set goals to provide ample opportunity for community involvement through job training, mentorship, as well as volunteer positions. Purchases from our farm, whether at farmer’s markets or of our Veggie Subscriptions, help to support well established local community food programs. Together with M.I.N.D., a West-Scarborough community support service, we have identified specific needs and Sparrow Gardens is now raising support to provide farm fresh veggies to local diabetes programs and community food programs and food banks.
