MISSION & VISION
Sparrow & Co. is a not-for-profit social enterprise that serves the community by strategically directing monetary donations and farm fresh vegetables towards those who are vulnerable and in need.
We believe that healthy and whole foods should be made accessible to all peoples; we are dedicated to addressing the food insecurity issues in our city. We believe that foods farmed using ethical and organic practices, foods that are fresh picked and delivered to struggling and impoverished communities are essential to the health and wellness of the body, mind, and soul. Not only do we donate farm fresh vegetables to local community food programs, but we also create pathways of hope and purpose for those caught in the cycle of poverty and mental health issues through work and volunteer positions.
HOW WE DO IT
OUR STORY
In 2017 Sparrow & Co. received a donation of land in the East Scarborough area which we named Sparrow Gardens. We went on to become Farmer's Market vendors at the University of Toronto in 2018 and at Evergreen Brickworks in 2019. As a result of the 2020 coronavirus pandemic Sparrow & Co. lost the farmland. However, we were determined not to let the setback stop us from fulfilling our mission. We utilized what resources we had and farmed donated backyard spaces in order to meet heightened food insecurity issues during the 2020 lockdown. Sparrow Gardens focused our efforts on the donation-crop; making connections and building partnerships with local community food programs that used our food to meet the needs of those struggling in poverty. In April 2021, we leased farmland in Richmond Hill, and successfully ran our Veggie Share program and were able to donate a large portion of our crops to households living in poverty, crisis, and need. WHAT WE DO
As a support to the community we set goals to provide ample opportunity for community involvement through job training, mentorship, as well as volunteer positions. As a not-for-profit business, Sparrow & Co. sells veggie shares to the general public in order to fund and farm the donation-crop. Any and all purchases from us or donations through our GIVE BACK page help to accomplish this goal and supports well established local community food programs, food banks, as well as our PATHWAYS OF HOPE program.
